ARTIST ◁ MENTORING
with Maria Bilbao·Herrera
Art is personal.
Art is a personal process.
This mentoring program for artists is designed based on the premise that although each of us have a very personal practice, we artists all share the same problems and questions about actually being an artist:
Objective feedback on your practice
Creative blocks
Support in editing or marketing your work
Artists statements
Portfolio reviews
Curating and exhibiting
Pricing and selling
Documentation
Making applications
Reaching new audiences
Having an artist mentor, can help you resolve the challenges you feel you face and implement an effective action plan. As an artist I understand all aspects of the artistic process and the challenges you face at every level. As an artist mentor with experience in the art world, I have a broad range of networks to draw upon.
I have the ability to get inside an artists practice, understand their unique language and what they are contributing to contemporary practice.
I will be able to assess your work within the context of the contemporary art world and support you making more focused work and find new audiences and more diverse platforms for showcasing it.
Artist mentoring is something you may feel you need once to kickstart a new body of work, something you draw on every month or quarterly to keep improving your chances of success. You determine how much support you need. We will work together to establish a critical dialogue and get the best results in the shortest period of time.
Think of me as a creative counsellor, tutor, advisor and goal setter. I currently mentor a number of artists who exhibit locally, nationally and worldwide. Depending on what suits them, we meet weekly, monthly or just a few times a year. I limit my mentoring practice to a small number of very carefully selected artists, who receive in-depth attention to transform their art practice.
I have two structures: we can meet just once, weekly, monthy or just a few times a year, or tailor made for you.
ONE TO ONE MENTORING SESSIONS:
During a one hour everything we discuss will be confidential and focused on you and your practice. Sessions can take place at your studio, at my studio or over Skype and you decide what we talk about, which could include:
- Developing your ideas
- Planning a new body of work
- Preparing for exhibitions
- Submitting proposals and applying for funding
- Writing your artist statement
- Getting your work out there
- Managing your workload and meeting deadlines
- Finding or rediscovering your creative voice
INTENSE PROGRAM:
During one month we will commit to meet once a week for an hour to help you define your individual practice and we will shape an individualized sequence of instruction based on your personal practice.
I will provide support, readings, references, ideas, lectures and assigments. The program integrates creative practice with the study of theory and critisism, to survey the philosophical landscape as it relates to your art practice. By the end of the program you will have a deepened understanding of this relation and the ability to address them, both in your own practice and in the world of contemporary art.
How much does it cost? The answer is there's no set cost. It depends on your current situation, and how often you want to commit.
Please get in contact with me so we can discuss your needs and see if I can help. This is the information i need to start from:

- Your email address
- Your city
